Cleaning Out the Trash

Matthew 15:16-20 (NIV)

16"Are you still so dull?" Jesus asked them. 17"Don't you see that whatever enters the mouth goes into the stomach and then out of the body? 18But the things that come out of the mouth come from the heart, and these make a man 'unclean.' 19For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander. 20These are what make a man 'unclean'; but eating with unwashed hands does not make him 'unclean.' "

Introduction: Every house, though clean and beautiful, has a trash can. All kinds of trash are produced in our environment. If this trash is not cleaned out, it will rot, and germs and disease will start to grow— eventually threatening our entire life.

1.    Trash that enters the heart.

        1) Trash that is produced inside the heart.

                (1) Galatians 5:19-21.

                (2) Matthew 15:19-20.

        2)Trash that the devil throws into our heart.

                (1)Through the environment (1Jn 2:15-16).

                (2)Through friends (1Co 15:33).

                (3)Through the mass media (1Th 5:21-22).

2.         Cleaning out the trash.

        1)    With the cleanser of repentance (1Jn 1:9).

        2)    With the water of the Word (Jn 15:3).

        3)    With the grace of the precious blood (Heb 9:22; 1Co 6:11).

        4)    With the power of the Holy Spirit (Gal 5:16-18).

        5)    By resisting the devil (Jas 4:7-8; 1Pe 5:8-9).

                Just as you have to clean the house every day, you must clean

                 your heart.Otherwise, you will get sick (Mt 15:18).

                Cho Seung-Hui, the mass murderer at Virginia Tech,

                 was a sick person whose mind was filled with trash (Pr 4:23).

3.    Fill the heart with good things (1Co 3:16-17; Ro 12:2).

        1) Fill the heart with the grace of redemption from the

            Lord (Eph 1:7; Ps 103:2-5).

        2)    Fill the heart with the Word of God.

                (1)Think.    

                (2)Meditate.        

                (3) Recite (Heb 4:12; Dt 30:14, 9-10).

        3)Proclaim with faith.

             Whatever fills our heart—good or bad—will come out and

             create our environment  and future (Mt 12:34-35; Pr 6:2; Ro 10:17;

             Ps 37:4; Pr 23:17-18).

Conclusion: Our heart is like a map of our life. The state of our

                         heart leads and  creates our life.
